Pablo Cáceres

Pablo Cáceres Rodríguez was the third player to join Real Mallorca in the summer of 2011 as a replacement for departed left-back Ayoze. Seen as a gamble by some with his lack of experience in European football, he had a bright start to his Mallorca career before injury ruled him out of the side.

Cáceres is a strong and quick left back who possess good technical and tactical skills. He also describes himself as ‘temperamental’. But despite being yellow card prone, he hasn’t yet suffered from any serious indiscipline.

The Uruguayan started his career at local club Danubio before moving to Europe at the age of 21 to join FC Twente. His spell in Holland was brief before he joined German second division outfit MSV Duisburg.

In three years he managed 23 appearances with the German side before another short lived move. He spent the remainder of 2009 in Cyprus with Omonia before returning to Danubio in 2010.

The journeyman didn’t see out the year in Montevideo and joined CA Tigre in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he stayed until moving to Palma in the summer.

Upon joining the club, Cáceres said, ‘I want to thank the people at the club who were interested in me,’ the defender told the club website. ‘I had several offers from Argentina and Europe but I was seduced by Mallorca. I know the city and I know it’s very nice. I’m very happy to be here and eager to meet my peers and the coaching staff. I have faced Chori Castro many times in Uruguay.’

Despite his doubters, Cáceres started his Mallorca career brightly with strong performances. But when playing against Real Sociedad he attempted to chase down a lost ball but couldn’t stop it going out of play. The Uruguayan fell when stretching taking a strong blow to his left knee. He remained motionless on the side of the pitch as Mallorca’s medical staff rushed around the pitch to help him. His adductor injury forced him out for 10 weeks.

Upon returning, Cáceres struggled to return to full fitness and will be hoping his luck in the second half of the season is much more fortunate.
