Webó agrees £1.1m Turkish move
Real Mallorca has announced that striker Pierre Webó has agreed a €1.25 million (£1.1 million) move to Turkish side Eskişehirspor.
The 29-year-old’s relationship with the Balearic Island club has become strained this summer. Mallorca were intent on selling the player due to his £19,500 per week deal breaking their new wage cap. But the tables turned when Webó refused to play in a pre-season friendly in Stockholm.
The striker then refused to play in the second Stockholm friendly and was left to train at La Ciutat Esportiva on his own when the rest of the squad flew to the Netherlands for pre-season preparations.
Webó’s agent Paco Casal flew to Palma to meet with the club administrators and new Chief Executive Pedro Terrasa. Casal wanted the club to release both Webó and Castro on free transfers so any future deal would include a large signing on fee for the players and Casal himself. The administrators flatly refused and, in the end, the two parties agreed on a £1.1m fee.
Pedro Terrasa said, “although in recent weeks we have had this negative situation, we do appreciate the commitment and professionalism of the player for the past four years.”
Club secretary Miquel Coca recently said that he felt Webó had been ‘ill-advised’ by Casal and that everyone at the club really respected the Cameroon international and wanted him to remain. Before these negotiations, the club were reportedly prepared to offer a two year extension on a wage within the club wage cap.
