Leicester City 1-1 Real Mallorca

Sven-Göran Eriksson’s Leicester City saw out a 1-1 draw with La Liga side Real Mallorca in the Stockholm Football Trophy. Both sides were reduced to ten men after Jonathan de Guzmán and Neil Danns were sent off.

Despite being named on the substitutes bench, Pierre Webó again didn’t play after the fall out from his refusal to play against Hammarby IF in which the club confirmed it will take disciplinary action. There was also no place for new signing Gianni Zuiverloon, who has only been with the team for four days.

It took 12 minutes for Mallorca to take the lead. After a Chori Castro shot was turned away by Kasper Schmeichel, new signing Tomer Hemed pounced on the rebound to score his first goal for the club to make it 1-0.

Los Bermellones sought to take control of the game in midfield, aware that a win was not necessary but both teams saw out a 1-0 scoreline at half time. Laudrup proceeded to make 5 changes at the interval, with Aouate, Uche, Kevin, Tito and João Victor all making appearances.

Four minutes into the second half, substitute Uche gave away a penalty which Gallagher was more than happy to convert to make it 1-1. And despite good link up play between Pereira, Ximo and João Victor on the hour mark, Mallorca failed to put themselves back in front.

Canadian midfielder Jonathan de Guzmán didn’t help matters after he picked up a second yellow card on 73 minutes.

But the two sides were ten men apiece on 84 minutes when new signing Neil Danns picked up his second yellow card.

Laudrup will again be happy with his side’s performance, despite the final result, knowing that progression is what’s key. But he will be concerned with the circus being created by, not only Webó’s refusal to play, but the fact what he is telling the media is different to the club’s version of events.
