Juan Calatayud joins Mallorca from Hércules

Hércules goalkeeper Juan Calatayud has joined Real Mallorca on a free transfer after his contract with the club expired. The Spaniard is Mallorca’s second signing of the summer, and joins on a two-year-deal.

The signing comes after second choice goalkeeper Germán Lux left the club after his contract expired. Laudrup had no faith in the Argentine goalkeeper, so Serra Ferrer began talks with Ismael Falcón, Juan Calatayud and Kiko Casilla. Serra Ferrer’s first choice, Ismael Falcón, took a long time deliberating over the contract offer with several other offers on the table – so the deal with 31-year-old Calatayud was finalised.

Calatayud came through the Málaga youth system where he went on to make 36 first team appearances. He also spent time with Getafe and Racing Santander before joining Hércules in 2008. As first choice goalkeeper, Calatayud helped Hércules to promotion back to the top flight for the first time in 13 years with the best defensive record in the league in the 2009/2010 season.
