Real Mallorca B 0-1 CE Sabadell

Real Mallorca B fell into further trouble in Segunda División B after defeat at home to league leaders Sabadell saw them drop a place to 18th and eight points away from absolute safety. A dubious 70th minute penalty from Juvenal handed the Catalan side all three points in a game described as ‘same actors, same artists, same script – a vulgar and apathetic display of football’ by Futbol Balear.

Mallorca had their chances in the first half with Sergi Enrich going the closest on 8 minutes. But as the second half grew older, Sabadell grew more dominant. A Juvenal corner 10 minutes into the second half saw a goalmouth scramble in the Mallorca area. Substitute Hiroshi, who had only been on the field for around 3 minutes, had the perfect chance to put the away side in front as the ball fell to his feet a yard or so away from goal. He failed to wake up quickly enough, however, and the home defence cleared.

Controversy struck in the 69th minute when Mallorca defender Ramón attempted to block a cross. The referee called it as handball and sent Ramón off, awarding a penalty to the away side. Replays suggested that the referee got the call wrong, as the ball hit him in the face. He wasn’t interested, however, and Mallorca were down to ten men. They were then a goal down when Juvenal converted the penalty with 20 minutes to go.

The performance wasn’t a promising one for Mallorca fans as relegation looks likely. Next weeks fixture will be hugely important – an away trip to 17th placed . A true relegation game. And they will be going without captain Ramón, who is now suspended following his red card.
