Fire tears through Estadio Lluis Sitjar
A fire in the club’s old stadium, Estadio Lluís Sitjar, has raised fresh concerns over the deterioration of the ground. A spokesman for RCD Mallorca stated that they are now looking to end the terrible neglect the stadium has endured and find a solution, not just for the bad image it portrays on the city.
The Estadio Lluís Sitjar was an 18,000 capacity stadium that was opened it 1945 and used until 1999 when Real Mallorca moved to Son Moix. It continued to be used by Real Mallorca B until the side started to play their matches at the club’s training ground which has a 2,000 capacity stand in 2007. Following this, the stadium fell into disuse and lay under metres of overgrowth. Large fences were raised to keep about drug addicts after the stadium became a hub for their pastimes. And it was the overgrowth that was the fuel for the fire and has prompted majority shareholders RCD Mallorca to take action.
Estadio Lluís Sitjar has around 300 shareholders, including the city council, but RCD Mallorca hold the majority of the shares with 30%. The club’s new owners will sit down with Palma town council to discuss what will be the best solution and will hope to have an answer in around two months time.
Plans had originally been made for the stadium to be demolished and replaced by a theme park, but those ideas were shelved. So, for now atleast, the stadium will stand in ruin.
