Vitesse Arnhem 1-2 Real Mallorca

Real Mallorca claimed their fourth victory of five pre-season games with a 2-1 win over Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

The game was only 19 minutes old when a needless Ayoze handball gave Vitesse a penalty. Pluim easily converted. Soon after, Emilio Nsue raced into the Vitesse box only to be brought down. His penalty, however, followed a worrying trend of this pre-season. The poor attempt was easily saved by Velthuizen.

Vitesse could’ve doubled their lead. A poor tackle from Josemi saw Mallorca standing like statues as Vitesse took their free-kick quickly. Ruben was worryingly shrugged off with ease but a poor attempt failed to trouble German Lux one-on-one.

It was Mallorca who struck next though. A quick corner from Gonzalo Castro on 36 minutes saw an Ayoze cross headed away by the Vitesse defence. Only for Mallorca B player Michael Pereira smash home an equaliser.

It wasn’t until late on when Castro flicked the ball over the top of the defence for Pereira to run on to only to be fouled just outside the area. The resulting Josemi free kick flew into the keepers bottom right of the goal.

Some slack defending nearly saw Vitesse Arnhem equalise as Marti Crespi needlessly gave the ball away. Fortunately for the visitors, Josemi got to the resulting cross first to clear for a corner.

A fourth win, but less than convincing. Whilst some off colour performances can be blamed on a lack of match fitness, the lack of quality in the scoring area seems a bit more deep rooted than pre-season cobwebs. This is easily proved by the poor penalties of pre-season so far.
