3,000 fans protest UEFA’s decision
According to police sources, 3,000 Real Mallorca fans lined the streets of the island infront of the Balearic Football Federation’s office in protest to UEFA’s decision to expel the club from the Europa League.
Under the slogan “UEFA, Fair Play, please”, the protesters walked a mile together to make their voices heard and spit all sorts of cries against the president of UEFA Michel Platini and the Spanish federation president Angel Maria Villar, whom they consider responsible for the situation created. Also, Villarreal had their share of the limelight with slogans against the yellow club and its president, Fernando Roig, for his “foul play towards Mallorca and wanting to win in the offices what [they] have not won on the pitch,” pointed out by several of those attending the event.
These protests are the first of it’s kind on the island. “It’s an injustice, they have attacked Mallorca with their decision and we cannot lie back and take it,” one supporter said. Jaime Colombes, who arranged the event, stated his disbelief at the attendance. “I did not expect so many peope,” Colombes said. “It has been a resounding success”.
UEFA’s decision, one which they may have thought will pass without too much trouble, seems to be garnering more and more attention. UEFA’s reasoning has not been helped by the timing of Barcelona’s debts being released, standing at a massive £369.5 million. Real Madrid financial irregularities are well known, as too is Valencia’s financial trouble. And Fernando Roig of Villarreal, the team who will replace Mallorca in next season’s Europa League, has announced the club is in over £150m of debt. Over three times the amount of Mallorca, despite the two clubs being of a similar stature.
And all British based fans are more than aware of Manchester United’s troubles. It was confirmed that their parent company’s debt is closer to £1.1 billion rather than the £716 million they announced back in January.
