Nunes Aims for Champions League
Mallorca captain Nunes has noted that a win away to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday would bring his side a step closer to participating in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The Barralets currently sit in fourth place in the Primera Liga table, two points clear of Sevilla, but have only managed to win twice on their travels this season and the 32-year-old defender knows his side must improve upon that statistic to join Europe’s elite next term.
“It’s a game that could decide things. We are two teams that are fighting to get into Europe and it will be a very difficult game. If we take a victory in Bilbao, the Europa League is very close. The Champions League would also be closer,” he is quoted as saying by AS.
“It should be borne in mind that if we win, the percentage chance of qualifying for Europe would be very high because it would leave the Athletic out of the contest. However, we know that we can also draw or lose and things change but we’ll see what happens.”
The Portuguese defender also stated that facing the partisan support at San Mames will be an extra motivating factor for his side going into Sunday’s game.
“The atmosphere of full stadia is something players like. I prefer playing in a full stadium as it gives you another motivation,” he noted.
