La Ciutat Esportiva
After nearly 85 years of existence, RCD Mallorca opened their first training complex – La Ciutat Esportiva Antonio Asensio (Mallorquín, Antonio Asensio Sports City). The facility is located along the Ma-11 from Palma to Soller.
Since August 1998, the players of the Real Mallorca first team, B team and youth set up have used the grounds, also known as Son Biblioni.
La Ciutat Esportiva has expanded since its inception and is now also used for B team and youth team fixtures thanks to the 1,200 capacity stand erected in the summer of 2006. In addition to this, there are four grass pitches as well as an artificial pitch. La Ciutat Esportiva boasts some of the best facilities in Europe because of the benefits available for players, coaches, employees, media and fans alike.
The complex also has nine changing rooms with four located under the 1,200 capacity stand. All of the changing rooms are spacious and modern. Within the complex is also a full gym, a heated therapy pool, whirlpool and sauna. There are more locker rooms and another gym for the youth teams in addition to the gym for the first team.
Mallorca also conduct any press conferences in the press room at the facility. There is space for more than fifty journalists in the press room and there are audio connections for radio and television.
Following the first extension in 2006, parking spaces were added for over 700 vehicles and there are plans to build a housing unit for 28 youth players. This was allow the players to move to the island to focus on their progression at the club. The plans would put the club in a very strong position for the future.
La Ciutat Esportiva is well known amongst European teams for it’s facilities being used by those such as Sevilla, Inter Milan and the German national team.
With the future of the club depending upon focusing on la Cantera, the project of extending La Ciutat Esportiva becomes key to achieving this goal. In addition to the benefits outlined above, the complex is used as a makeweight in co-operation deals with local teams. This means Mallorca are informed of, and have first option to, any young talent belonging to local teams in exchange for the local teams being allowed to use the facilities.
