Real Mallorca have announced that veteran goalkeeper Jesús Cabrero has signed a one year contract extension to remain with los bermellones until at least the end of the 2016/17 LaLiga2 campaign. Cabrero, who will turn 35 at the end of the month, has been in Palma since 2014 and is entering his third season with the island side.
El número trece had already spent a year with RCD Mallorca B when he was 23-years-old. He returned at the age of 33 to join a first team that had fallen from grace – not only relegated to la segunda, but finished 16th too. He was an undisputed starter for a similarly frustrating campaign in the 2014/15 season and proved himself as a solid shot stopper despite what their league position reported.
But the position of el número uno del portero saw Mallorca upgrade to a younger, trendier model last season. Highly rated Schalke goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther joined the club on loan and held down the number one jersey all year, but this upgrade failed to have any impact on the disappointing league position.
Whether or not Wellenreuther returns to Palma – Mallorca are interested but a deal is unlikely – Cabrero will expect to play second fiddle. Roberto Santamaría is the name surfacing more than others in the press as the alternative, but the truth is no one really knows what the outcome will be just yet.
